New ShowMe Feature: Adding student accounts!

We’ve been working hard this summer to add some new features for the school year. We noticed that many teachers wanted the ability to manage student accounts and that students often do not have access to email. So, we built an easy way for you to create student accounts! Email is not required and teacher’s have total oversight over what kids are up to.

Just follow these steps to get started!

First, open up ShowMe and tap Activity. Look for the green button that lets you Find more people to follow

Second, in the bottom left corner side of the screen that appears, tap Create a student account

Next, enter your student information. Remember to indicate if they are under age 14! Tap Create Account when you’re ready

You’re done! You’ll receive and email with the login information and password which you can give to your student.

If you’d like to change the username or password, just login and navigate to the student’s name in the top left corner of the app. Tap it and select Settings to make changes.

This is a wonderful feature. However, the fact that when you create student accounts the program automatically has them follow some users is not so wonderful. As a teacher, we want to be able to protect and manage accounts as much as possible. Is there a way to get rid of that automatic follow feature?

I would like to change my 3rd graders’ automatic username and password to their school login and password, but I am not able to save the changes to their account without entering an email address for them….but they are under 14 and don’t have email addresses. Can you help me with this? Thanks!

As a teacher, I would also like to know how you can delete the automatic follow feature. It is not a feature that teachers want for their students. Also, I have my students following me on ShowMe, but how do they see other students work? When they hit find people to follow it wants access to an address book or facebook, which they do not have. Can you just type in the user name?

    Hi Mary,

I’m very grateful that you pointed this out because it should absolutely not be happening. Students should not be following anyone automatically except for their teachers. I will send this bug to our developers and I will update you by email when it’s fixed. So sorry for this!

As for finding a friend, yes you can just search for a username in the search box on the “explore” page. Alternatively, your students can see who you are following and click on the profiles from there :)

Please email me if you have any more questions about student accounts!

[...] Adding Student Accounts in ShowMe [...]

I have created my student accounts. I have user names and passwords but from the main page am unable to log in with those. How can me students see creations that we have made that are private?

I think this is great! But it looks like all students get to see all showmes, which is not ideal.
I have several different sets of showmes designed for different groups and want some individuals only to follow me in one group. How do I specify their access? I can send individual showmes to them by email but i want them to be able to go and revisit any that I’ve placed in the group – however NOT go to all the showmes I’ve created as many are irrelevant or are my trials.
I’m asking here because the Help process on your site is actually a series of blogs rather than a comprehensive tutorial or document set.
    Thanks!
